Boholini Pizza, Now Open

Posted on: December 27th, 2016 by Athena

IDEA is producing an always-increasing number of deaf graduates, and job placement for them continues to be a great challenge for IDEA. Unfortunately, IDEA’s Employment and Income Generating Projects (EIGP) cannot accommodate all its graduates so we are always seeking other ways to help our graduates become self-supporting. IDEA’s founder, Dennis, has long dreamt of training deaf people to be entrepreneurs and run their own business.  It is our pleasure to report that one dream is now taking off in the form of a small pizza business.

The first Boholini Pizza started operations this month. It consists of a stall that is located at the entrance of the Tagbilaran City seaport. Owning and operating the business are two of our hardworking deaf graduates, Jhun Emmanuel and Daniel. Since the pier gets a lot of people late in the afternoon and evening, it opens at 3:00pm and closes at 11:00pm. The stall serves dine-ins and take-outs. Aside from pizza, they also sell different flavors of shakes, muffins, and are on their way to adding frappes, frozen bananas, hot cupcakes, and other delicacies to the menu.

The Boholini Pizza is privately owned and operated while IDEA assists with equipment and start-up costs. IDEA provided a three-year loan to the owners to cover the stall, appliances, and the start-up cost.

Most of the customers were amazed to see the Deaf running the Boholini pizza. Maybe some customers will learn sign language eventually, but for now they place their orders in written form.  Many customers wanted to communicate their appreciation to Jhun Emmanuel and Daniel who were both thankful to receive positive feedback like, “Wow! It’s good. Delicious!”

It is IDEA’s hope that more Boholini Pizza stalls will be put up in the years to come. Ultimately, it is our dream that the Deaf will be able to support themselves and become successful business people!

Christmas is a time to be merry. It’s a time when families and friends host parties to celebrate the season. This year, the IDEA family also gathered to celebrate all the people who keep our organization flourishing.

The IDEA family kicked off the holiday season with a Christmas Party on December 17 at the Dao Diamond Hotel, one of IDEA’s Employment and Income Generating Projects. More than 300 attended the party including family members of IDEA employees who were encouraged to come. IDEA founder, Dennis Drake, welcomed everyone at the start of the program. A trio of singers headed by our IDEA President, Marilou Drake, set the mood of the party as they sang “O Holy Night.”

Everyone shared the excitement of sharing joy. All the kids eagerly lined up as Marilou and staff handed out gifts. The children happily opened the bags filled with toys, accessories and food. They also enjoyed exchanging their gifts and easily made friends with each other.

As fun as the gift exchange was, the highlight of night was easily the “IDEA’s Got Talent” competition. Everyone was entertained and wowed to see each department proudly showing their talents. Each group worked hard to prepare their presentation. The Bohol Deaf Academy (BDA) teachers and staff stole the show and won the competition with a unanimous decision from our three judges, teachers for the Deaf in elementary. The judges gave second place to the group from IDEA Café and Pension House for their incredible role-play of the birth of Jesus and dance performance. Finally, The unique Pentatonix-inspired performance from the IDEA office staff earned third place (Pentatonix is a five-member American A Capella group from Arlington, Texas). Although not everyone won, all the performances were adored and their craft greatly appreciated.

During all the excitement of the talent show, there was also a raffle. Everyone was hoping to win one of 300 prizes. The minor prizes included clothes, footwear, kitchenware, and toys. A lucky few went home with a steel cabinet, high chair, bunk bed, single bed, washing machine, or refrigerator. After each draw a joyful, “Yehey! That’s me!” was heard.

“Thank you IDEA and thank you, Lord, for our many blessings! This is really useful for us. I’m so glad that I attended the party,” said teacher Nicel while looking through the steel locker she had won.

We owe a big thanks to the donors who shared their blessings to make our annual celebration a success. Everyone truly had a joyful time and savored the time together. Everyone felt at home in the IDEA family.

Christmas is in the air!

When December came around, our deaf students began writing their Christmas wish lists with great expectation. Just like most children, the fun of Christmas is gifts. They have good reason for their excitement because IDEA makes sure their students receive a Christmas present each year.

IDEA makes a shopping trip for all our deaf students each Christmas season. On the 8th and 9th of December, our elementary teachers and IDEA staff took their students’ wish lists to the biggest mall in the city to find gifts and get things they would need. At the same time, the high school students of Bohol Deaf Academy (BDA) shopped for their own lists, guided by their teachers. The students’ eyes were filled with joy and excitement as they ventured through the mall. The students picked out things like dresses, shoes, pants, shirts, bags, and even toiletries.

“How lucky these deaf kids are. They already have early gifts,” said one sales lady who was assisting the high school students.

These gifts are all thanks to the donors and sponsors who allow us to share the true meaning of Christmas. For many of our deaf kids, this is the only gift they’ll receive this season. They are surely feeling happy and blessed to receive these gifts. Many students can’t wait until next week when they get the chance to wear their new clothes to their Christmas party!
